Celebrating Excellence in Education

Mr. Anthony Carter

There are teachers who do their job well, and then there are teachers who quietly shape a school’s culture, inspire confidence in students, and leave a lasting mark on everyone around them.

At The Jones-Gordon School, Mr. Anthony Carter is one of those teachers, and we are proud to share that he has been nominated for the Cognia Circle of Excellence Award, a recognition that honors educators whose work truly makes a difference.

A Path to Teaching Rooted in Real Life

Mr. Carter’s path to education was not a straight line, and that is part of what makes him such a powerful teacher. Before entering the classroom, he worked as an engineer, a professional guitarist, and an automotive mechanic. These experiences didn’t disappear when he became a teacher; they became part of how he teaches.

He also lives with ADHD and dyslexia, which gives him a profound understanding of what it means to learn differently. For many students at Jones-Gordon, that understanding is felt immediately. Mr. Carter doesn’t teach from a distance. He meets students where they are, encourages them to think creatively, and shows them that learning doesn’t have to fit into a single mold to be meaningful or successful.

For students who have struggled in traditional classrooms, his presence alone can be reassuring. He is living proof that challenges do not define limits, and that curiosity, persistence, and problem-solving matter far more.

A Classroom Where Learning Is Active and Purposeful

Step into Mr. Carter’s classroom and you will not find students passively memorizing facts. You will see them building, testing, questioning, revising, and collaborating. Since joining The Jones-Gordon School, he has worked intentionally to raise expectations for what science education can look like while ensuring students remain engaged and supported.

He aligned the middle school science curriculum with NGSS and Arizona standards, but he didn’t stop there. He designed lessons that ask students to apply their learning in real ways, through projects that require creativity, critical thinking, and teamwork.

One of the most memorable examples was last year’s Biome Project, where students designed ecosystems, researched environmental factors, built websites, and transformed the school into a living showcase of their work. It wasn’t just a science project; it became a shared experience that brought together students, faculty, and families in celebration of learning. For many students, it was the first time they felt proud to publicly explain complex ideas they had built themselves.

That sense of ownership is something Mr. Carter intentionally cultivates. Students don’t just learn science in his class, they learn how to think like scientists.

A Teacher Students Trust and Admire

What truly sets Mr. Carter apart is how deeply he is respected by students. They know he takes them seriously. They know he listens. They know he will challenge them, but never dismiss them.

He brings energy into the classroom, yes, but more importantly, he brings consistency and care. Students feel safe asking questions, making mistakes, and trying again. That trust creates an environment where learning happens naturally and confidently.

Ask students about Mr. Carter, and you’ll hear stories about experiments that didn’t go as planned but turned into learning moments, about encouragement given at just the right time, about a teacher who believes in them even when they don’t yet believe in themselves.

Leadership Beyond the Classroom

Mr. Carter’s impact reaches far beyond his own students. He has played a key role in redesigning the school’s science program, helping to strengthen scope and sequence and ensure continuity across grade levels. He has delivered professional development for colleagues and supported instructional growth schoolwide, always with a collaborative and generous approach.

He mentors fellow teachers not by telling them what to do, but by modeling curiosity, openness, and reflection. His colleagues know him as someone who shows up ready to help, ready to listen, and ready to problem-solve.

In every role he takes on, he leads with humility. He is not interested in recognition, but recognition has found him anyway.

A Vision for the Future of STEM at Jones-Gordon

Looking ahead, Mr. Carter continues to invest deeply in the future of science and STEM education at The Jones-Gordon School. He has co-authored a Bosch Community Fund grant proposal to help launch a robotics program, expanding hands-on opportunities for students across divisions.

This year, he is also leading the development of a twice-yearly Science Innovation Day, designed to bring students together around shared experimentation and discovery. And on October 31, 2025, he introduced the school’s inaugural “Spooky Science” event, an imaginative, schoolwide celebration that blends inquiry, creativity, and excitement for learning.

These initiatives reflect who Mr. Carter is as an educator: someone who is always thinking about how to make learning meaningful, memorable, and joyful.

Why This Nomination Matters

The Cognia Circle of Excellence Award recognizes educators who embody excellence, integrity, and impact. Mr. Carter’s nomination is not just a professional achievement; it is a reflection of the countless moments, seen and unseen, that define his work every day.

He is the teacher who stays late to refine a project.
The colleague who offers support without being asked.
The mentor who believes students are capable of more than they realize.

Most of all, he is someone who changes lives, quietly, consistently, and sincerely.

We are incredibly proud to celebrate Mr. Anthony Carter and this well-deserved nomination. His work strengthens our school, inspires our students, and reflects the values we hold dear at The Jones-Gordon School.

Congratulations, Mr. Carter. We are grateful for you and honored to learn alongside you.
