Experience Dyslexia

An International Dyslexia Association (I.D.A.) Workshop

Overview

In this workshop, participants rotate through six learning stations that simulate language-related tasks typically encountered in classroom and workplace settings. Station facilitators guide participants through each 10-minute activity. Following the simulation, participants will have the opportunity to reflect on and discuss their experience.

  • Station 1: Learn to Read simulates a beginning reading problem

  • Station 2: Listen to Me simulates an auditory figure-ground problem

  • Station 3: Write with Mirrors simulates a visual-motor and writing problem

  • Station 4: Name That Letter simulates a letter-word identification problem

  • Station 5: Write or Left simulates a copying and writing problem

  • Station 6: Hear and Spell simulates an auditory discrimination problem

Benefits

Allows participants to experience some of the challenges and frustrations encountered by individuals with this language-based learning disability while getting a realistic insight into the challenges faced by dyslexics.

Participants will also gain a better understanding of how dyslexia impacts learning-related tasks through a powerful learning experience that can profoundly impact how educators approach teaching students with dyslexia.

Lastly, participants will be able to improve on dyslexia awareness for parents, educators, and show why certain accommodations and teaching strategies are a necessity for students with dyslexia
