Camp Descriptions

Musical Theatre Camp
Offered weeks 1 AND 2 (must register for)

Open to entering 2nd-9th Graders
With visiting educator Maya Hana Evans

An additional $25 fee applies. It is strongly recommended that campers are present for all days during this 2-week camp.

Campers work together to stage, choreograph, design, rehearse, and perform a fully-staged production of an abridged musical (the Wizard of Oz!) in just two weeks! This camp is for young artists who get a THRILL out of singing, dancing, and devising characters, and want to learn more about these essential musical theatre skills. The big show is presented for family and friends on the last day of camp!

A skilled theatre professional, Maya began her theatrical journey at Scottsdale Desert Stages Theater (at age five!). Since earning her BFA from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, she has been working on stage and behind the scenes in NYC and Chicago as a performer, director, producer, instructor, (and more). As a teaching artist with Kids Creative in NYC, she collaborated on a hip-hop musical adaptation of a Ray Bradbury short story for elementary students. She also spearheaded an Apprenticeship program & devised work at Harlem’s Coalition High School for Social Change. Maya is a member of the Musical Theatre Factory’s Director/Writer Coalition, and is currently the assistant director and associate producer for an original show premiering in Manhattan. Find her online at mayahanaevans.com.

Rina Yurcak was born in Guatemala City, Central America. She has been teaching Spanish K-8th grades in Arizona for the past 17 years. Her approach to learning languages mirrors the way children acquire their first language: it follows a natural process that uses memory and engages all the senses. It is her goal to help children to be lifelong learners, to foster the love of learning another language, and to help children develop an appreciation for cultures different than their own. During the school year, Rina teaches in the Cave Creek Unified School District.
