Around School…
A Day In the Life of a JGS Student

See our kids learning in action, while taking a look at some of the program elements that make JGS unique!

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math)

In JGS STEM classes, science, technology, engineering, and math are integrated into lessons that focus on solving real-world challenges. STEM lessons immerse students in hands-on inquiry and open-ended exploration, allowing them to further develop critical thinking, reasoning, teamwork, investigative, and creative skills that can be used in all areas of their lives.

FLEX Hour

Unique to JGS is a daily FLEX (short for FLEXible!) period. The FLEX hour provides each and every student with a full period dedicated to remediation, acceleration, or enrichment. FLEX hours are spent working one-on-one or in small groups on multisensory reading, programming, and even creating our very own school-wide recycling program (a great opportunity for executive function skill building)!

Project-Based  Learning

JGS students are inspired to explore thought-provoking areas of thematic study, investigate real-world problems, and collaboratively solve a variety of challenges. Their ideas and inventions come to life throughout the year during our Showcase events, culminating in our academic event of the year, The Talent Showcase Project. This event highlights our strengths-based approach to education, as student exhibits–featuring their strengths, gifts and talents–are housed within the many galleries that make up “The Jones-Gordon Museum.”

Specials (Art, Cooking, Music & P.E.)

Specials classes are vital program elements at JGS. Art develops creativity and critical thinking skills, while music supports math and language development. Our Cooking class allows students to practice executive functions skills (e.g. planning, organization) while creating delicious and nutritious snacks, entrees, and deserts. In addition to fitness and sportsmanship, in our P.E. program students learn how to play a variety of team sports throughout the school year, allowing them to gain new skills and confidence in a safe, caring environment.

JGS StuGo (Student Government)

JGS student government is comprised of several elected positions (President, Vice President, Secretary, Vice Secretary, Treasurer, Vice Treasurer, and grade level ambassadors). StuGo spearheads JGS’s monthly givebacks program, disseminates news and information with weekly announcements, and generates excitement and school spirit through Spirit Week events held throughout the year.

Critter Corner

Meet the JGS Critter Therapy Crew!  Furry, scaled, shelled, or slithering, our critters support the emotional needs of JGS students and provide unconditional love to JGS students each and every day.
